†īloodlines is kinder, but ignores Jezebel’s music career entirely. We were essentially doing SWAT raids, except for the Camarilla rather than elected political officials. In the tradition of punkpunk genres (that is cyberpunk or steampunk but not necessarily cyber or steam), our employers were very likely trying to get us killed as an alternative to letting us into their community in earnest. Our cadre of neonates were used by the local Camarilla ** as expendables or canaries used to harass the enemy and draw weapons fire. Juan: I read your books! I read all your books! Juan: Joan Wilder… Joan Wilder? The Joan Wilder? Jack Colton: Okay, Joan Wilder, write us out of this one. To borrow a moment from Romancing the Stone (1984):

Got any openings?)Īlso, in all fairness, my referee was generous enough to allow me a bit of fame. (More recent expansions of the Presence discipline are similar to power-of-rock, but this indicates this is late-game high level power, well outside of the scope of neonates trying to survive.) And if you’re playing a game where the Toreador cracks out her Fender Stratocaster at the same time everyone else is cracking out swords and assault rifles, and then holds her own, then you’re probably not playing Masquerade. Nothing beats that!) but power-of-rock tends to be the big gun in the end that either facilitates the arcing scheme to victory, or stops the arching scheme from sealing everyone’s doom. Taken to the furthest extreme, Toreadors utilize the power of rock (Good ol’ rock. Malkavians and Nosferatu will leverage from the shadows. Really, of all the clans, (the original seven) they are dead set against applications of force: Brujah and Gangrel will scrap it up and solve problems with direct action. Most of our group chose Gangrel or Brujah. A night in which the combat mats weren’t broken out was a slow night indeed. My group had come from a long history of superhero and fantasy adventure roleplaying. Sadly not: my saxophonist quickly turned into a wallflower. I was a fledgling musician at the time and figured Toreador might be a perfect fit. Vampire: The Masquerade came out in 1991. It just may not be a popular idea to use one’s vampiric powers for the sake of artistic expression, then to fuel cultural movement. I’m not entirely thrilled with clan Toreador as it’s described in a couple of wiki articles available. (Ergo my recent fanfiction.) From there I’d set about trying to understand why Toreadors are so dissatisfying.

Once I observed this was a repeating phenomenon, I was motivated to better understand what (I opine) Toreador should feel like. My first character playing the Vampire: The Masquerade in 1991 was Toreador, and his career as a saxophonist really just dissolved once the campaign got started. This has become a recurring problem between my Bloodlines and early pen-and-paper experiences with the Toreador clan. Once the game starts, the music career of Jezebel Cross has been at a standstill, which is not a good look for a Toreador. Once in Los Angeles, Jezebel is cute enough (and practiced enough as a goth-rock singer-guitarist-songwriter) to catch the eye of a vampire. But she’s more afraid she’ll end up in fast-food middle-management, which seems her inevitable fate if she stays in New Jersey. Yes, she is a bit afraid she’s going to end up stuck in porn. Jezebel quits the band, goes solo and drives out for Hollywood. Jezebel has a falling out with her bass guitarist and drummer. Her mortal story, now irrelevant, starts her as a goth-rock garage band frontrunner from New Jersey. Jezebel Cross * (I chose the name) was sired by a vampire from clan Toreador in Los Angeles during the introduction of my most recent play of Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines.
